It’s not recommended, however, I sometimes have trouble connecting to the internet in Automatic Mode. To change the your provider manually, go to Menu, go to Settings and type 311. From there select your selection (Example Below):

Glen, I understand when switching wireless service manually, it only allow you to select GSM network rather than CDMA operator. Amazon needs to fix that. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for the tip; I just got a new Kindle (Amazon sent one overnight, no charge, because my original unit’s joystick control broke) and found I can’t connect to wireless; turns out the new units are international and are set to use AT&T. Sprint is what the older units use, and that works fine for me. AT&T’s coverage map says I SHOULD have signal, but I don’t. (I’ve now tried two different units and spoken at length with customer service).
So I was glad to see your post, but having tried it, I find AT&T is the ONLY service my unit can find — despite not being able to get even a single bar worth of signal.
Glen, sometimes there’s only one selection if AT&T is dominating the area. Like in my area in LA, I’m stuck with Verizon as a selection. It all depends on the area. I could be wrong though.
Our two Kindles (early model 2′s) work fine on Sprint. My broken one still connects as it always did, but with the joystick cracked I knew I’d have to get a replacement unit, as Amazon doesn’t repair them. So it’s not that Sprint isn’t in the area — we get a solid 5 bars of signal most of the time — but the replacement “international version” Kindles don’t know Sprint is here, for some reason.
