How to successfully upgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 5. I decided to hold on to the upgrade until now, in the evening. To see if anyone in iPad Yahoo Groups or iPhone Yahoo Groups ran into some snags. Some did, but enough to know what I should look for. There are two things you can loose if you don’t do it right, one is all the apps don’t sync, and two, all your backups are gone, which means no saved games and whatnot or you can loose both. I just upgraded my 2 iPad 2, 1 iPad 1, 2 iPhone 4 and 3 iPod Touch to iOS 5. It took me awhile to upgrade all that and I did find one snag. One of my iPad 2 lost all my apps and contacts. Here’s how to successfully switch to iOS 5.
First, use one PC or Mac to do all the upgrade and follow the sequence as is, don’t skip a step.
1. Install the latest iTunes, in this step, iTunes 10.5
2. Plug in your iDevices that you want to upgrade to iOS 5
3. Transfer your Purchases by right clicking on your iDevice in iTunes and select Transfer Purchases from “Your iDevice Name”
4. After step 3 is done, right click again on your attached iDevice and do a Backup
5. After the backup is done, you can click on the Update button in iTunes
From here it will state that it will automatically backup all your information, however, I did not trust that enough, since my iPad 2 was a victim of maybe my own mistake somewhere along the way, but I didn’t take any chances and you shouldn’t either.
It will download the Software from here and you just need to wait. If you leave it plugged in, you just need to follow the instruction in iTunes and it will automatically restore for you.
If anything goes wrong and you are in a hurry, like I was with my iPhone, I unplugged it after it was done updating. I didn’t let iTunes restore automatically for me. When I got back to the same computer, I plugged in my iPhone, right click on my iPhone in iTunes and click on Restore from Backup and then I selected the most recent backup. This method is for manual restoring, which also works if you are switching from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S. You just need to restore from your iPhone 4 Backup to iPhone 4S.
If you have a new computer, follow the steps above, and just sync back all your apps after you do a restore from your Backup. It will retain all your saved games progress, magazines from Zinio for example, as well as your off line videos that you have if you use Good Player or O Player and etc.
That’s all you have to do. Good luck.
