Update: MagicJack so far works on at least two places in Jakarta. Both of the MagicJack was setup back in the states with local number and five years of service. The second MagicJack was installed without the VPN and it works.

MagicJack has been around for awhile. Enough times where people complaint about it’s lack of customer service and reliability. I am currently living in Jakarta, Indonesia and from what I heard it doesn’t work here. I gather some info and guessed the problem. The problem is because the first time you install MagicJack, it download the settings and files to your computer. I’m also guessing during that time it detects my ip provider as International. Since MagicJack has the promo of anywhere in the U.S for $69 for 5 yrs, they don’t want international users to use it.

I got mine to work and a local number to California. The voice was clear, no lag, no stutter. I installed this on my PC with Windows XP that’s always on. I even have Google Voice forward to that number. Now all I need is a Digital Answering system with that. So the trick is, get a VPN to dial to U.S. That’s all. If you setup the PC that isn’t with VPN, it will give you an error about downloading the server settings.

There’s also a report that it only works with one PC. The PC that initially was setup with. But that isn’t true either. It works on two PC, one PC was in California to setup MagicJack, second PC is in Jakarta. As long as you don’t have slow connection, you are fine with voice quality.

So the advantage of this for International use is, one, you get a local phone number to your choosing. Second, you get to make calls all over the U.S for free for 5 years. Now that’s a deal.
