Updated (June 19, 2010): from Associated Press, iPad version of the application will be out soon, read more.

If you have Apple iPad and you go to Roman Catholic Church, you can read the liturgy on your iPad. It is sorted through the month and dates, it also have the reflection for your readings. I use it for the mass readings. Save the paper, and read it on your iPad, or if you have the kindle, you can download the PRC straight to your Kindle by following the link below.

The iPad version has list through out the whole month and requires internet, unless if you save it offline before you go to church, while the Kindle version has all the month in one file. So you can go through any day of the week with your Kindle.

While there is no PRC Reader for the iPad as of now, the only way to read offline web pages is through Safari on the iPad.

Everybody is moving towards cloud computing, data can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, information can travel faster than old media by email. The new media should be on cloud, instead of the old media way, print then web, it should be the other way around. Reporters posting onto the web directly, rather than one reporter for the web and another reporter for print. We are on a path to digital media, Kindle, Nook, iPad and Smartphones. Anything where you can get news pushed directly to your devices is new media way. Why wait for you to read the news the next day when you can have it on that day.

But what if people still prefer the old media way? Physical paper in their hand? That’s fine, but the way it should be is to combined both reporters into one, consolidating the way we report and submit the news. Print can decide what to print, and news on the web can be overwhelming, but the more the better. This way, we still keep the culture of old media, and without breaking the bank. John Paton, CEO of Journal Register, is about to prove it with his Ben Franklin Project.

The news can be posted to the web, such as through the popular Content Management System (CMS) by WordPress, use Google Docs to store your Documents for Backup, and Flickr to store your images. With Flickr, you can use Creative Common so people can pay for the images and when it’s time to print, print can just pick which high quality files to choose from on Flickr that was uploaded by your reporter on the field.

Here’s why digital should comes first before print. If print comes first, then they will have to worry about H&J (hyphenation & justification — that is, fitting text to finite holes in print designs). That dictated their process and we have to follow it. But if it was digital first, journalist and writers can write in the first line without worry about how it would look like in Print. It’s easier to adjust digitally than if you were to worry about hyphenation and adjust justification. They can write on their blog, worry free. That would save time, cut cost and best of all, it works in both format, digital and print for the company.

This would open up a new culture of writing to writers and journalist. If they can blog about their writing, they can ask questions to the public,  such as, “Good idea? Is there something else you think I should do instead? What’s the best use of my time? What do you want me to find out for you? If I do this story, what questions do you have? What do you know? Whom should I call?” As the process continues, the reporter can share what she learns or doesn’t learn; and the community can help fill in blanks and make the reporting better.

Then a print editor can grab the story and fit it for print. This would eliminate the issue we had if we were to just convert everything to digital first, then print. Instead of going to the traditional way, this way, we can be ready for the future, in-case nobody wants to read physical newspaper anymore and would rather read online or on their Kindle or iPad. Shocking, but it’s already happening in parts of the country, Europe and North America; best to embrace what will be rather than taking a nose dive like some other print company in the U.S. Yes, there are standards worth saluting from classical journalism. But there are also new methods and opportunities to be learned online. No one owns journalists or its methods or standards.

Robert Picard writes that journalism:

is not business model; it is not a job; it is not a company; it is not an industry; it is not a form of media; it is not a distribution platform. Instead, journalism is an activity. It is a body of practices by which information and knowledge is gathered, processed, and conveyed. The practices are influenced by the form of media and distribution platform, of course, as well as by financial arrangements that support the journalism. But one should not equate the two.

Kompas App for the iPad

Any News Media Company should at least embrace the iPad as a device that can consume media well. Kompas, located in Jakarta, Indonesia, has done just that. It’s the first News Media Company that developed for the iPad in Indonesia. And it’s not just news that the app is providing, it’s beyond that. What’s inside is more than news on a device, it’s entirely unique, and it’s designed so you can read the news while enjoying the video within the app. Watch the Video below to see what I’m talking about.

So why should a news media company develop for the iPad? It’s not because it’s the latest and greatest from Apple, but if you are into video, surfing the internet, consuming media, the iPad does it well. There are shortcomings with the iPad, such that it’s not an ebook reader, it won’t do Flash Player, you won’t be able to browse the internet fully since Flash plug-ins isn’t built-in, but other sites without Flash will do fine. So, why am I so excited about this app? One, it’s because you can’t put video on a newspaper, two, you can’t scroll through multiple images for one story on a newspaper. And third, the way I see it, the iPad can and will change the way we read news, there will be interaction built into it, there will be rich media built into it, it will be different in how we perceive media as we know it.

So what does it take to do all these interactions? Well, you can thank Adobe InDesign for that, combined with the iPad SDK 3.2, you can built an application for any News Media Company and do it well. I’m still reading with my Kindle 2, because my eyes don’t get tired from a back-lit LCD screen. And because the Kindle 2 is way lighter, more comfortable to hold with one hand, and it’s simple. Sure it’s nice to read with the iPad since iBooks looks very nice when you flip the page, and it’s good enough if you don’t have Kindle.

Kompas Apps for the iPad is not in the App Store yet, should be there in a month or so, Kompas Editors’ Choice for iPad and Kompas.com app for the iPhone/iPod Touch is available now. Below is a brief video of what the Kompas Apps will be when it’s out. The app is not fully finish, but you’ll get the idea. I have left out the part where you can scroll through images in one article in the video. You can also check out another iPad App that was done by Kompas for their Business News Edition here.

Companies who are in iPad Bandwagon for their Magazine and News would be Wired, Time Magazine, Financial Times, Trends, Pottery Barn, USA Today, New York Times Editor’s Choice, How It Works, Popular Science, Winding Road, The Guardian Eyewitness, iCreate, Marvel and many more to list.

(Quotes from New York Times)

“And the techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. It’s not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it’s infinitely more convenient for consuming it–books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. For most people, manipulating these digital materials directly by touching them is a completely new experience–and a deeply satisfying one.

The bottom line is that the iPad has been designed and built by a bunch of perfectionists. If you like the concept, you’ll love the machine.

The only question is: Do you like the concept?”

Recently I have switched from WebcamXP to iCam. iCam is for Mac and Windows and you can view the video streamed or previously captured to your iPod Touch or iPhone. If you have a Java Enabled Browser, you can view the stream. However, I haven’t been able to view my videos on my Mac yet.

iCam is a webcam software for your PC and iPhone/iPod Touch, which allows you to stream your webcam video live or you can review what was captured within the App. The images are stored on your hard drive. But instead of using my hard drive to store the images, I use DropBox. iCam needs to be installed to your PC or Mac to be able to view the streaming video or the captured images.

DropBox is an online storage, free for 2Gb, and it synchronize your files instantly to Dropbox server. If you don’t want Dropbox to share your files publicly, it won’t, unless if you set it to share publicly. But by default, it’s private. Dropbox is compatible with Windows and Mac.

If you want to sign up with DropBox, you can get an extra 250mb by following on the link: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTY0MzYyNTI5.

DropBox iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch Application is also available on the AppStore for free.
The iCam iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch Application is available on the AppStore for $4.99.

If you have BlackBerry, you won’t be able to stream videos like you can on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Instead, you have to use DropBox by going to http://www.dropbox.com and login and select the folder where your iCam images are stored. Or you can just use MobiScope or WebCam XP. MobiScope and iCam is device specifics, while WebCam XP is compatible with all Smartphone.

DropBox is a good alternative in case the iCam UDP Port is blocked by your Network Administrator; you can still view the capture still images from your iDevices or BlackBerry.

The iCam combination with DropBox, you can be assured that the images on your PC is stored safely online. If you have  a webcam setup in your home or at your office and your PC or Laptop get stolen, your webcam images with it, leaving yourself clueless on who took your PC or Laptop. With DropBox, everything is stored online and you can view the captured images and find the perpetrator who stole your stuff.  It’s more for your insurance.

Before I decided to use DropBox, I’ve been using my Network Drive, Buffalo Linkstation Live 1 Terrabyte and just recently, I was asking myself, what happens if that Network Drive gets stolen too? Even though it’s hidden well, the network cable is still visible and if the thief can steal the router, he can route the network cable back to my Network Drive. So the DropBox is a Backup for the Backup.

Once you have DropBox installed, you can open the folder by going to your My Documents Folder and find My DropBox for Windows. If you use OS X for Mac, it’s in the DropBox folder in Finder. I use DropBox in both Windows and Mac and I can sync one another without being on the same network. That’s another advantage of DropBox.

Update: Dropbox is made for the new iPad.

seo links

As you probably already know, the more websites that link to your website, the higher you’ll rank in search engines. Now there are a lot of shady ways to get backward links, such as buying text links from brokers or website owners. Or even worse, hacking old WordPress blogs and adding in links to your website.

I do NOT recommend that you do anything shady as it results in short term gains and in the long run you’ll have a good chance of getting caught and potentially being banned from one of the major search engines. Continue reading »

Sony HDR-CX100, Flash based Camcorder with 4.0 MegaPixel Digital Still Camera. Carl-Zeiss Lenses, with built-in 8GB Flash Memory with the ability to expand your Flash memory with an added 16Gb HG Duo. Below is a transfer information I did with the built-in Flash memory.

Transfer Info with Built-in 8GB Flash Memory:
2 Minutes of Video on HD-FH Quality 1920×1080 = 252Mb File
Transfer to EEE PC 900 via USB Cable = 21 Seconds on 2 Minutes HD-FH Quality Video.

2 Minutes of Video on HD-SP Quality (Standard Play) 1440×1080 = 139Mb takes 9 Seconds to transfer via USB on to EEE PC 900.

Empty Disk on 8Gb Flash = 58 Minutes of HD-FH Quality
Battery = 90 Minutes
Optical Zoom = 10x
LCD Screen is Touch Screen

Transfer Info with 8GB Pro Duo:
2 Minutes with Memory Stick Pro Duo 8Gb HD-SP Quality = 24 Seconds Transfer via USB to EEE PC.
120Mb for 2 Minutes on HD-SP Quality on Memory Stick Pro Duo 8Gb

2 Minutes with Memory Stick Pro Duo 8Gb HD-FH Quality = 27 Seconds Transfer via USB to EEE PC.

240Mb for 2 Minutes on the Memory Stick Pro Duo 8Gb HD-FH Quality

HD-FH is 1920×1080 Resolution
HD-SP is 1440×1080 Resolution

In Low Light, the Lens Compensate for the dark and express the light to the lens without adding light to the image. I was actually suprised when I took the video and compared it to my naked bare eye. The camera screen was brighter than what I’m seeing. Even after the video was transfered to my PC, it has the same quality. It doesn’t matter which settings I took it, HD-SP or HD-FH, they were both stunning on the built-in screen as well as on the 42 Inch Plasma with the HDMI cable.

I put together all of my DVD Collection in my PC. I can still watch them using my XBOX 360 or PC Connected to the TV. It’s more convenient for me to consolidate them and categorize them. Three of my PC Connected to my Flat Screen TV has Media Center PC. Browsing through my DVD Collection is a breeze. XBox 360 has the same Media Center PC Browsing look and feel. I have done a screen shot of how to convert your DVD so you can watch it on your PC.

Step 1:
step1

Open DVD Shrink 3.2

Step 2:

step2

Select the Open Disc Button.

Step 3:
step3

Wait until it reads the disc.

Step 4:
step4

This is how it looks when it’s done reading the disc.

Step 5:

step5

Click on the Re-Author Button.

Step 6:

step6

Step 7:

step7

Go to Compression Settings Tab and Uncheck all the Audio that you don’t need such as Spanish or French but leave English checked otherwise you won’t have sound and the unnecessary picture in subpicture. If you would like to keep the subtitle for English, leave the subpicture for English incase you want to turn on Subtitle while watching on your PC.

Step 8:

step8

In the Compression Settings Tab, the Pull Down under Video, select Custom Ratio.

Step 9:

step9

slide it to the lowest to the left, and deselect all the ones you don’t need. I like to have a subtitle on mine, so I left the subpicture on there. I used VLC to watch my movies with subtitle.

Step 10:

step10

Go to Edit Menu and Select Preferences

Step 11:

step11

Go to the Output Files Tab and make sure the Split VOB files into 1Gb chunk is uncheck.

Step 12:

step12

Click on the BackUp Button when you are ready.

Step 13:

step13

Select Backup Target to Hard Drive and select the folder to your destination. Leave the box for Creating a Video and Audio TS SubFolder uncheck.

Step 14:

step14

Wait until it is done converting the video.

Step 15:

step15

After it is done converting, go to your Destination Folder and rename the biggest file there is, usually just one file and usually called VTS_01.vob. Rename the extension to Name of Movie.mpg. That is all. Final result below.

step16

If you have Tivo Desktop, you can put the MPG to your TiVo folder and your TiVo should be able to see the MPG video. I usually watch it either with my PC or with TiVo.

Once you convert it to MPG, the possibilities are endless. You can convert the MPG file to iPod, or Xbox 360, or even to your phone in 3GP format. Those are in different discussion of course.
