This is an update to those who read my other post about Restoring your BlackBerry Messenger Contacts after an upgrade from BlackBerry Messenger 4.6 to 5.x. This post is about restoring your contacts if you decide to upgrade from one BlackBerry device to a newer BlackBerry device. Just recently, I had to upgrade from my Bold 9000 to Bold 9700, and the steps below were done not just with mine, but with three others from upgrading to the similar device.

I had one particular trouble with one of the device, prompting me to upgrade the BlackBerry Messenger to 5.0.0.57 from 5.0.0.23 on a White Bold 9700. So I did and after a reboot, all the contact list were gone. And the person I’m helping, don’t have a back up of her contacts remotely.

If this is the case, what I did was to do a backup of the contact lists remotely on the old device, then on the new device, I did a restore. The backup is usually tied to your email.

So what if you don’t have an email on your BlackBerry? Kind of odd and rare occasion, but it does happen. What I did was I did a Switch Device and on the new BlackBerry, I don’t do the upgrade right away, instead, I setup an email, then do a back up of the contact list from there and then do the upgrade to 5.0.0.57 and did a restore.

Below are the basic steps to Backup and Restore.

1. Backup your BlackBerry Messenger Contacts remotely:

  • Go to your BlackBerry Messenger
  • Click on the BlackBerry Button
  • Go to Options
  • Go down to Contact List
  • Click on Back Up Button

2. Go to your New BlackBerry Device

  • Go to your BlackBerry Messenger
  • Click on the BlackBerry Button
  • Go to Options
  • Go down to Contact List
  • Click on Restore Button
